Check out the article in the Boston Metro for VisSom2

Check it out! I got my event in the Boston Metro.

Not only was the event a hit, but I think we did something magical there. We brought in all types of visual art. We projection mapped most of the gym, we had analog oil colors on one of the walls, a custom designed interactive wall that you could “paint” on with your smartphone, and even a (world debute) custom VR setup that allows 2 people in the same VR environment. It was quite a time.

We spent a lot of time on this event. We were there all day Friday and most of the day Saturday just getting ready and setting up. When the event started we ended up having so much power pumping through from the projections that we blew the entire power grid in the building….5 times? Eventually we got that sorted and the event was off.

Next door we had a live music jam by Mmmmaven and several of my talented musician friends.

We packed the house on both sides and I think it was a hit. For now check out some of the pictures below and the album linked here.

Robotheart Burningman 2015 vj set

Robotheart set 2015 from bonk on Vimeo.

My 2015 burn was summed up by my set at Robot Heart. I was lucky enough to play for the talented Scumfrog and Serge Devant. I even got to play after and meet a person VJ hero of mine, VJ Culture. It was a great time. Although my camera cut out and I did not get much video of the event, I will share one shaky moment where I looked up from my rig long enough to be totally blown away. It was just before sunset and I looked out…to thousands of revelers.

A burningman crowd is a very special thing. You feel the energy from everyone and know with all the other amazing events taking place all over the city, that those few thousand people want to be there, and only there. That everyone is invested in being at this music, this moment, this slice of heaven in the barren desert. It washes over you and makes you want to commit to hightening it. That you need to push with all your creative work and focused effort to making this moment so important, nothing else matters. It was a performers dream. I was so involved with my art that I would only notice the party and remember to look up…every 45 minutes? It became a blur, where people next to me, the beers handed to me, the cold, the beautiful girls, everything was secondary to my art. It was communication with a mass consciousness, and playing to the whim of both the crowd and the music. That part of the vj life cannot be taught, it is only bought with time and effort.

Great burn with good friends, and overall a magical time. I will be back since there is no where else like that city.

Vj competition recap video now out

I finally had the time to edit down the video of the night and get a recap video out! We were so excited to produce this year, all the elements, the gracious sponsors, the amazing visual artists, and the Together Festival really came together. Next year will be even bigger with more visual artists, more cool video and gear, and much more awesome. We have big plans for the VJ competition! Stay tuned.

In the mean time, of course check out the video below and get a sample of what a VJ, or visual artist, can do. This event was all about putting some of the amazing talent that usually is just hidden behind the crowd into the forefront. I think they did a pretty good job, and there was a few sets where I was really impressed by the ingenuity and overall performance. We had a lot of heavy hitters this year, a few from Zebbler Studios, a few more professional VJs, and even a few crazy code hackers. What a great group and great VJ competition.

Thanks to our awesome VJs:
BUZI
Parzer
Yegglet
ProjectileObjects
Levitation Theory
Clear Void
Adrenochrome
Jaeson Tek
OPTEX
VisualVince

Thank you again to our sponsors Resolume, Alien TV, Arkaos, Doc Optic, Livid, Leap Motion, Mixvibes, Neuromixer, Vid Vox, Vezer, VJ Loops, Magic Music Visuals, and Synthetic Software.

Check out the video below.

Recap of Further Future

So Further Future was definetly a great time. Although there were quite a few bumps on the road during the event, in the end it turned out to be one of the best. I think as a first time festival they aimed high and really hit it out of the park. I spent most of my time at night Vjing on the bus, which really was a treat. It had these huge LED screens that were so bright we had to turn them down to 30%! Crazy.

I will definetly go back, and because of my awesome VJ friends (Tamara and Steve), got some great video too. Check out the short clip below for a sample of my set.

Visualize Somerville projection mapping recap

The Visualize Somerville event was BLAST! The projections looked amazing, the art show was a huge hit and it looked like the night went into the history books. We spent quite a good amount of time working with the venues and making everything run so smoothly and we definetely had our ups and downs creating this event. I personally had some hard set backs that only were overcome by some seriously hard work from both the team and myself. In the end though, this created a most magic night. The art show next door, which will have its own photo album, was special as well, more on that in another post. This was a large event, with many hundreds of people coming to climb and just see the walls. I was bowled over by the sheer amount of people there!

So many people showed and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. Here are but a few of the pictures, and some amazing videos and pictures are coming out later.  I would like to thank everyone that helped create this event, Brooklyn Boulders, Aeronaut Brewery, Above Summit, and all of the Vjs and Djs.

We are in the last few days before this event, and everyone involved is very excited! We are working to make this event incredible, and pulling out all the stops.

The VJ team has been non-stop rendering new content specifically for the walls, and it is looking like something out of the future. The best part? You can climb it! Check out the Facebook event here and the presales page (only $6 purchased before, $10 at the door, $25 w/o gear to climb).

Of course, make sure to speed up your entry by filling out the waiver as well.

We are planning both the projection mapped event and next door we are working with Aeronaut Brewery to bring over 40 artists into the space. There will be installations, paintings, photography, and even live art. We are very excited to bring this into the Visualize Somerville fold, and feels it helps highlight the rich nature of the local area. Of course there will be Aeronauts delicious beer on tap as well (Keep in mind to climb next door at BKB before you drink, no drinking and climbing!). Aeronaut is free entry as well.

The team can’t wait, and we are excited to see you there!

Blizzard fun

So Boston has had a bit of snow. As in the snowiest few weeks in history. At this point we are just bracing for the next one and struggling on. But having this much snow does come with benefits. Last night was the perfect time to kick back and play some N64, and since we have to the equipment, why not project it on the parking lot?

Visualize Somerville, Feb 27th!

So a few months ago I attempted to pull together a projection mapping event at a rock climbing gym local to me. Unfortunately it did not happen due to a pipe bursting and ruining the projections (they were insured luckily), but coming back to it and now we are doing it again!

This time around it is a much bigger event. We are trucking in over 50,000 lumens of projection systems (a normal projector is around 2000 just for reference) and lighting up a large part of Brooklyn Boulders. Check out the space:

The VJ team is working on some amazing content as well. They have created custom models and are churning out the content for some really unique stuff!

Next door to Brooklyn Boulders is Aeronaut Brewery, which is a great new event space and brewery/bar. They have hosted all sorts of cool gatherings there, from bands to projection events (Bring Your Own Beamer) all the way to a retro gaming night! In creating Visualize Somerville, we included them and they are now going to be throwing an art show next door. We are getting something like 32 artists to come in and put up everything from photography, installations, performances, paintings, and other creative artistry. We just selected the artists and I am very impressed by both the diversity of the artwork and the impressiveness of it.

This multi venue event will be on Friday the 27th of February and go from 8pm-11pm at Brooklyn Boulders, and 8-midnight at Aeronaut. Links and flyer below.

Modem video out

I was lucky enough to be part of a truly amazing festival this summer, MoDem in Croatia. I worked the amazing Italian based Deltaprocess VJ team to light up the massive main stage and chill areas for a solid week. The mapped stage was huge and, along with the other incredible deco, made for a most mind shattering week of psychedelic trance.

The recap video for the festival has finally come out today, and of course the VJ team is highlighted! If you want to skip to it, after the 8 minute mark is when they start to focus on the visual content, I even have a cameo.

Check it out, it is one thing telling people about an event like this, but it is another to show them. Later when I have the time I will update with my own videos, pictures and stories. Until then enjoy the recap!

(and as always, check out my whole travel blog as I update it through the countries I went through this summer!)

Finally Back

After quite the journey, I am back in Boston to recollect myself and start the next chapter. I will be updating my Tumblr with my trip details and stories. I got to VJ at 2 very special locations, and will add those to this site once I get them situated!

Final days to submit for the VJ competition!

It went so fast! Once again, this years VJ competition is in full swing. The last day to submit an entry is Sunday at midnight!

We already have some great entries, but I hope to get a few more in. This event is a celebration of VJ culture in the USA, which sometimes I feel is under represented. Live visual creation is an art, and there are many of us that perform this art for our own enjoyment.

Together-2014-vj-comp

Now is the time to come out from the back of the venue and show the world what you can do! We have some great prizes this year, a QuNeo midi  controller for starters, Nueromixer, Resolume, and TouchDesigner (Derivitive) have all graciously provided software as well. I can’t just wait to give out this stuff to the winners, always makes me feel good to help out my fellow visual artists.

The deadline is Sunday at Midnight as I said, and all entries will be taken and reviewed by the judges. What a group we have right the judging panel, Ghostdad (best known for the visual artist behind the Porter Robinson shows), Shawn Flaherty, a local vj and CEMI favorite and winner of the NIN video contest a few years back. Of course we cannot forget about Brian Kane, VJ legend in his own right!

I can’t wait to see who will be chosen to come out to this event. I can only get more excited.

Of course, come out and see the show! Show really be some amazing content being displayed.

Om Unit at Elements

BIG NIGHT!

The timing couldn’t be better for a visit from the mighty Om Unit, who has taken dnb in an exciting direction this year! Among his astounding output are tunes featured on the long-awaited Metalheadz Platinum Breaks 4 LP which, according to rumors, is maybe hopefully about to drop any week now. Fasten your seatbelts! This night is going to be no joke! Opening set by Lenore.

This should be a great set, I am very excited to be playing for him!

Cyantific this Thursday, Elements

This Thursday at Elements is Cyantific, and I have some sick new stuff to throw on the screens!

Cyantific is not only a beast in the studio, with an ever-growing arsenal of chart toppers on Hospital, Ram, and his own Cyantific imprint, but the man puts it down behind the decks too! No one was surprised when he was crowned “Best Breakthrough DJ” by BBC 1Xtra in ’07. Don’t miss out on the fun! Opening set by Fox. Visuals by me.
