Daily After Effects art piece – monster garden

monster garden daily from bonk on Vimeo.

I am getting back into the habit of creating something, anything that is a piece of art each and every day. To dedicate the time to a creative passion and put practice into my art is the reason, and will not only provide me with new artwork, but also new ways to create art. All in all, a small daily art piece only will help improve my skills and get my creative juices flowing. Now, instead of just sitting down and neflixing out for the rest of the night, at least there will be time set aside to the abstract, the creative, what my passions and muses are at that moment. I find having a muse very important, and when I do not have one, its a struggle to figure out where to start. I get caught up in the sheer infinity of the many ways I can create, and the paths that each of those ways goes. It’s like standing in front of a giant store that has everything you need and not knowing where to go, and trying to get everywhere!

Anyways, I am doing my dailies again. I took this picture of a hot summer night in my garden and some EL wire. Now I turned it into a small Parallax video, and I am pretty impressed myself. It was my first time doing it and I think (now that I know how to do it) will expand upon it. Enjoy the monster garden.

Recap of Further Future

So Further Future was definetly a great time. Although there were quite a few bumps on the road during the event, in the end it turned out to be one of the best. I think as a first time festival they aimed high and really hit it out of the park. I spent most of my time at night Vjing on the bus, which really was a treat. It had these huge LED screens that were so bright we had to turn them down to 30%! Crazy.

I will definetly go back, and because of my awesome VJ friends (Tamara and Steve), got some great video too. Check out the short clip below for a sample of my set.

Resolume lessons

Now that I am home a bit more than the last few months, I am proud to announce I will be providing Resolume lessons. I have worked with both Resolume Arena and Resolume Avenue, and have worked with these programs in a professional setting for many years. I would be happy to help vis skype or screenshare to teach others the finer points of the programs. I can help with not only how to get started, but also how to become more advanced as well.

-Basics and where to start

-Midi contoller setup

-OCS mapping

-Advanced video mapping setup

-Effect controls

-Source help and content routing

Rates start at $60 USD an hour and can be done both via screenshare or in person if local to the Boston area.

Just use the contact page to setup a time.

Harvard Business School vj gig

I had the chance to randomly get a vj gig at Harvard Business School. It was through a referral of someone, and it was a great time. First off the location (Spangler Hall) was amazing. The entire visual setup was built right into the building and the projectors were built right into the doorways. At first I thought the projectors would come down from the ceiling but they were both located in the archway of the the doors! Pretty posh.

The event was for a Digital Summit for the school, and after the talks (with likes of the founder of Zipcar for example), there was a gala. They wanted to bring in something different and that meant a video artist like me! I got to setup my TouchOSC setup on my Ipad and walk around and let people trigger controls. It was a great time. The best part of course was I had to wear a suit, which I do like to do one in awhile. It is good to get out of a music venue and into somewhere new.

Visualize Somerville Recap Video

We finally are releasing the recap from Visualize Somerville! This is a product of so much dedication and work from many talented teams of artists.
I came up with this idea almost 2 years ago, and since then it has been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. We almost didn’t have it happen….twice!
But becuase of the crew around me and a massive effort at the end, we came together and produced a unique event that I am truly proud of. The documentary team, Above Summit, really came

in and blew it away with the video capture. Time lapse rigs, drones shooting video, and a full crew to capture the moments. I am glad that the art show got some credit too, that was a part I didn’t know

would be so much work! The artists were very helpful and the work they put up was really breathtaking. All I can hope is people had fun and will want to do it again. I got the thumbs up from both venues, who know where we

will go with this now? Check out the video and stay tuned.

Visualize Somerville projection mapping recap

The Visualize Somerville event was BLAST! The projections looked amazing, the art show was a huge hit and it looked like the night went into the history books. We spent quite a good amount of time working with the venues and making everything run so smoothly and we definetely had our ups and downs creating this event. I personally had some hard set backs that only were overcome by some seriously hard work from both the team and myself. In the end though, this created a most magic night. The art show next door, which will have its own photo album, was special as well, more on that in another post. This was a large event, with many hundreds of people coming to climb and just see the walls. I was bowled over by the sheer amount of people there!

So many people showed and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. Here are but a few of the pictures, and some amazing videos and pictures are coming out later.  I would like to thank everyone that helped create this event, Brooklyn Boulders, Aeronaut Brewery, Above Summit, and all of the Vjs and Djs.

We are in the last few days before this event, and everyone involved is very excited! We are working to make this event incredible, and pulling out all the stops.

The VJ team has been non-stop rendering new content specifically for the walls, and it is looking like something out of the future. The best part? You can climb it! Check out the Facebook event here and the presales page (only $6 purchased before, $10 at the door, $25 w/o gear to climb).

Of course, make sure to speed up your entry by filling out the waiver as well.

We are planning both the projection mapped event and next door we are working with Aeronaut Brewery to bring over 40 artists into the space. There will be installations, paintings, photography, and even live art. We are very excited to bring this into the Visualize Somerville fold, and feels it helps highlight the rich nature of the local area. Of course there will be Aeronauts delicious beer on tap as well (Keep in mind to climb next door at BKB before you drink, no drinking and climbing!). Aeronaut is free entry as well.

The team can’t wait, and we are excited to see you there!

Blizzard fun

So Boston has had a bit of snow. As in the snowiest few weeks in history. At this point we are just bracing for the next one and struggling on. But having this much snow does come with benefits. Last night was the perfect time to kick back and play some N64, and since we have to the equipment, why not project it on the parking lot?

Visualize Somerville, Feb 27th!

So a few months ago I attempted to pull together a projection mapping event at a rock climbing gym local to me. Unfortunately it did not happen due to a pipe bursting and ruining the projections (they were insured luckily), but coming back to it and now we are doing it again!

This time around it is a much bigger event. We are trucking in over 50,000 lumens of projection systems (a normal projector is around 2000 just for reference) and lighting up a large part of Brooklyn Boulders. Check out the space:

The VJ team is working on some amazing content as well. They have created custom models and are churning out the content for some really unique stuff!

Next door to Brooklyn Boulders is Aeronaut Brewery, which is a great new event space and brewery/bar. They have hosted all sorts of cool gatherings there, from bands to projection events (Bring Your Own Beamer) all the way to a retro gaming night! In creating Visualize Somerville, we included them and they are now going to be throwing an art show next door. We are getting something like 32 artists to come in and put up everything from photography, installations, performances, paintings, and other creative artistry. We just selected the artists and I am very impressed by both the diversity of the artwork and the impressiveness of it.

This multi venue event will be on Friday the 27th of February and go from 8pm-11pm at Brooklyn Boulders, and 8-midnight at Aeronaut. Links and flyer below.

Glitch Pong

Made this awhile ago, forgot to post it! Check out a video I made with my dear friend Zebbler. This was done using several shot and in post creating a slitscan effect. This technique (which I personally love) displaces the time which makes the movements all funky. I want to do it again with a higher frame rate so I can get even more control. Next time. Anyways, enjoy!

Modem video out

I was lucky enough to be part of a truly amazing festival this summer, MoDem in Croatia. I worked the amazing Italian based Deltaprocess VJ team to light up the massive main stage and chill areas for a solid week. The mapped stage was huge and, along with the other incredible deco, made for a most mind shattering week of psychedelic trance.

The recap video for the festival has finally come out today, and of course the VJ team is highlighted! If you want to skip to it, after the 8 minute mark is when they start to focus on the visual content, I even have a cameo.

Check it out, it is one thing telling people about an event like this, but it is another to show them. Later when I have the time I will update with my own videos, pictures and stories. Until then enjoy the recap!

(and as always, check out my whole travel blog as I update it through the countries I went through this summer!)

Final days to submit for the VJ competition!

It went so fast! Once again, this years VJ competition is in full swing. The last day to submit an entry is Sunday at midnight!

We already have some great entries, but I hope to get a few more in. This event is a celebration of VJ culture in the USA, which sometimes I feel is under represented. Live visual creation is an art, and there are many of us that perform this art for our own enjoyment.

Together-2014-vj-comp

Now is the time to come out from the back of the venue and show the world what you can do! We have some great prizes this year, a QuNeo midi  controller for starters, Nueromixer, Resolume, and TouchDesigner (Derivitive) have all graciously provided software as well. I can’t just wait to give out this stuff to the winners, always makes me feel good to help out my fellow visual artists.

The deadline is Sunday at Midnight as I said, and all entries will be taken and reviewed by the judges. What a group we have right the judging panel, Ghostdad (best known for the visual artist behind the Porter Robinson shows), Shawn Flaherty, a local vj and CEMI favorite and winner of the NIN video contest a few years back. Of course we cannot forget about Brian Kane, VJ legend in his own right!

I can’t wait to see who will be chosen to come out to this event. I can only get more excited.

Of course, come out and see the show! Show really be some amazing content being displayed.

Fractaltribes Subculture this Saturday!

Subculture holds a special place in my heart. That is why I just had to get down there to do some visuals for this momentous event! The venue is a giant old industrial warehouse and they do it up proper, especially on the video mapping side of things. I am very excited to make my visuals light up the revelers as they dance under the amazing deco that goes up at every event they do!

Positron at Elements this week

We were so impressed with Positron’s opening set earlier this year that we wanted to bring him back for a headlining set ASAP! Come rep for his first official Elements appearance and rest assured, he does not disappoint! Opening set by Fox.

New visual set tonight as well, so I am fairly excited!

Calyx and Teebee

Thursday is yet another HUGE night.

Calyx & Teebee are back for the first time at Elements since 2007!

These two not only put out some of our favorite music like clockwork, but they are masters behind the wheels too.

Do not sleep! Opening set by Fox. New visual set by Yours Truly.

15 years of Elements Boston

…server was down for a bit there, sorry folks.

-Last week played with Siouxside and Positron at Elements, very fun locals night and had a great time mixing some new content.

THIS WEEK!

This week at Elements is big! Elements is Celebrating 15 YEARS of Drum and Bass music. What a time! This also marks 6 years as a resident Vj as well, which bowls me over. 6 years of mastering my craft and countless artists coming through. Both Czargb and I will be playing that night, and I am in the works to make some custom 15 year content just for this historic night! Don’t sleep, come out and get down!

Then Elements founders Crook and Lenore take the reins along with co-resident Fox for the ritual anniversary tag. And did I mention it’s the night of a rare black moon/supermoon? Do try and stay calm. There will be several giveaways, including Zakim Recordings 12″s courtesy of BBD, and as always we will unveil brand new Elements tees!

(After) New years throw down!

This Thursday at Elements will be fun, it is a throwdown with many of the talented Boston Djs coming to light up the decks!

Come celebrate our entry into 2014 with some sassy new djs (new to Elements, that is) along with some vets for a sure-to-be killer throwdown!

FDOT (Point 9 Audio | MIA) aka Shawn Conte
Fes (EC Army)
Positron (Elemental Productions) aka Adam Karpf
Prez (Reset from Start)
Twist of Fate (The Mutiny)
Veloci Oscillator (Op Breakbeat | EC Army)

I will be on the visuals, and (if I get up in time on new years day) I will have an all new set to put on the screens! This set will be crowd interaction heavy, so come play with the video!
