Check out the article in the Boston Metro for VisSom2

Check it out! I got my event in the Boston Metro.

Not only was the event a hit, but I think we did something magical there. We brought in all types of visual art. We projection mapped most of the gym, we had analog oil colors on one of the walls, a custom designed interactive wall that you could “paint” on with your smartphone, and even a (world debute) custom VR setup that allows 2 people in the same VR environment. It was quite a time.

We spent a lot of time on this event. We were there all day Friday and most of the day Saturday just getting ready and setting up. When the event started we ended up having so much power pumping through from the projections that we blew the entire power grid in the building….5 times? Eventually we got that sorted and the event was off.

Next door we had a live music jam by Mmmmaven and several of my talented musician friends.

We packed the house on both sides and I think it was a hit. For now check out some of the pictures below and the album linked here.

Visualize Somerville 2

Visualize Somerville 2 (or #VisSom2 for short) is going full steam! Our Kickstarter is just a few days away to being done and we are so close to getting funded!

We have had a few successful tests of our interactive systems as well lately, and are moving ahead with both the load testing and polishing the UX (in layman terms, this means we are working to make sure the custom programs we are building to connect the phones and the video program that paints on the walls can handle 30+ people using it at the same time, as well as having a nice layout so people can understand what is going on!).

Beyond that it is business as usual, we are getting more and more attention about this, and I could not be happier. From this day we have 59 days to go before the event happens!

I also got interviewed by Fallons Daily Toast about the event as well, check it out here:

Visualize Somerville 2 Kickstarter up!

The following 2 months are going to be very exciting.

First and foremost, I am going to be creating (yet again) Visualize Somerville. It will be at Brooklyn Boulders Somerville again, but this time it will also be interactive. What does that mean exactly though? That means you can go onto the provided wifi on your smartphone and play with the visuals yourself! We are working hard at this, there is many moving parts of course.

Most importantly to mention is we have launched a Kickstarter for the event. Check it out here. (As of this writting) We are at almost 1/4 required $4000, which is both super exciting as well as very stressful. As the interactive portion of the event requires a lot more gear (for example, the router alone costs $500 and we need 3 more access points, which are $80 each), we needed to reach out to the community to make this event happen. The (very costly) projectors, the police detail for the event, paying the crew, random gear we will need to buy in a pinch, and of course the computers themselves do NOT come cheap. Check out the video here:

(I had a great time making this video, some of the outtakes of Dabu and I were really funny).

This is also my Masters Capstone project for Harvard Extension. A Capstone is the alternative choice from doing a Thesis, it’s semester long project that combines all the details of what you have learned during your Masters program. Mine was IT with a focus on Digital Media, so it makes sense to me I would be doing it this way! Lots of work ahead of me though, and luckily I have some great people helping me with it.

furthur future logo

I also got selected to perform at Futher Future again, the plucky little festival by Robotheart outside Las Vegas. That is very exciting and I can’t wait to get back out there to show the world how visual productions are done. That is at the end of April, can’t wait!

On top of all of that, I am moving to LA in June! There are many reasons to do this, sun, a new place, a bigger city, more work, friends, to be challenged again, but really it is, as Gregory Mallory said about Everest “Because it is there”. Just a new place and new opportunities. I don’t yet think I will be staying there forever and settling down, but well, we shall see right?

On the way out there, I will be stopping at Movement Detroit, which I have never been to and heard great stories about. As I have missed Detroit several times which running around the country, it’s about time to get out there and see what the big deal is. After that, I will just keep driving west and eventually land in Los Angeles. Quite the life, and although I have no idea about work or where I will live yet, I am excited to see where this next grand adventure will take me.

Robotheart Burningman 2015 vj set

Robotheart set 2015 from bonk on Vimeo.

My 2015 burn was summed up by my set at Robot Heart. I was lucky enough to play for the talented Scumfrog and Serge Devant. I even got to play after and meet a person VJ hero of mine, VJ Culture. It was a great time. Although my camera cut out and I did not get much video of the event, I will share one shaky moment where I looked up from my rig long enough to be totally blown away. It was just before sunset and I looked out…to thousands of revelers.

A burningman crowd is a very special thing. You feel the energy from everyone and know with all the other amazing events taking place all over the city, that those few thousand people want to be there, and only there. That everyone is invested in being at this music, this moment, this slice of heaven in the barren desert. It washes over you and makes you want to commit to hightening it. That you need to push with all your creative work and focused effort to making this moment so important, nothing else matters. It was a performers dream. I was so involved with my art that I would only notice the party and remember to look up…every 45 minutes? It became a blur, where people next to me, the beers handed to me, the cold, the beautiful girls, everything was secondary to my art. It was communication with a mass consciousness, and playing to the whim of both the crowd and the music. That part of the vj life cannot be taught, it is only bought with time and effort.

Great burn with good friends, and overall a magical time. I will be back since there is no where else like that city.

Fractalfest Prelude and Counterpoint this weekend

Busy weekend on the visual front! Getting back to my roots and doing some visuals at 2 excellent shows.

Tonight is Counterpoint at the beautiful outdoor venue the Marsh Post. Usually this is a Veterans of Foreign wars post, but this Friday it becomes so much more! Counterpoint is a celebration of friends new and old and is guaranteed to be a great time. I will be doing video all night. Come check it out!

Fractalfest Prelude party

Saturday is another heavy hitter of an event in Worcester. While I would never usually go there, this is worth taking the trip out to! The venue is a huge warehouse and the people are a crazy psy trance crew. This is also a garanteed incredible time. I am looking forward to this event for the last few weeks and have been churning out the video for them. Come find me and see you soon.

FractalFest is confirmed

So I am confirmed for Fractal Fest in the great northern woods of New England. Very excited about this, these guys, Fractaltribe are great people and really care about their events. Every event they do have been intentional, well designed, and most importantly, FUN! This year I (finally) am taking the time to go up there and show they just what we can do to make the world shine a bit brighter. I am looking forward to working with all other other VJs this year too, many of them are great friends and I am happy to think of just what types of awesome video techniques we come up with. Put to many of us in the same room and we start coming up with all sorts of beautiful content and tricks to make the minds eye flutter.

Ever been to an event in the woods of New England? It is a special type of place. Of course my mind always does wander to the west and its vast tracks of desert and arid forests, but, like the NorthWest, New England has a special flavor that is hard to find anywhere else. You need to eperience it to truly understand. Most importantly though, bring a raincoat and bug spray. I never said it was the best conditions, just unique. The woods are bursting with life, which is great in some ways, but not in others (like lots of mosquitoes). But fear not, since when the music is going, and the video and bass hit you all at once, you will understand it was all worth it to be in the forest paradise.

Not going yet to Fractalfest? Come out! You will be happy you did. Details at the Fractal Tribe site.

Good luck and see you there! Much more info to come.

Visualize Somerville, Feb 27th!

So a few months ago I attempted to pull together a projection mapping event at a rock climbing gym local to me. Unfortunately it did not happen due to a pipe bursting and ruining the projections (they were insured luckily), but coming back to it and now we are doing it again!

This time around it is a much bigger event. We are trucking in over 50,000 lumens of projection systems (a normal projector is around 2000 just for reference) and lighting up a large part of Brooklyn Boulders. Check out the space:

The VJ team is working on some amazing content as well. They have created custom models and are churning out the content for some really unique stuff!

Next door to Brooklyn Boulders is Aeronaut Brewery, which is a great new event space and brewery/bar. They have hosted all sorts of cool gatherings there, from bands to projection events (Bring Your Own Beamer) all the way to a retro gaming night! In creating Visualize Somerville, we included them and they are now going to be throwing an art show next door. We are getting something like 32 artists to come in and put up everything from photography, installations, performances, paintings, and other creative artistry. We just selected the artists and I am very impressed by both the diversity of the artwork and the impressiveness of it.

This multi venue event will be on Friday the 27th of February and go from 8pm-11pm at Brooklyn Boulders, and 8-midnight at Aeronaut. Links and flyer below.

Fractaltribes Subculture this Saturday!

LOGO_03-e1394735688855

Subculture holds a special place in my heart. That is why I just had to get down there to do some visuals for this momentous event! The venue is a giant old industrial warehouse and they do it up proper, especially on the video mapping side of things. I am very excited to make my visuals light up the revelers as they dance under the amazing deco that goes up at every event they do!

More info, prizes, and surprises to come!

Vj Competition starting to take shape

We are just about to blast out the info about this years VJ competition, and I could not be more excited on where we are going with it. New Venue, more sponsors (and prizes!), huge new game plan and a lot more time to get down.

Flyer and major info blast to come out soon. Prepare you demo sets!

Anime Boston 2014

This weekend is Anime Boston, which is a huge deal in that subculture. I was honored to play a visual set there a few years ago and I have NEVER seen a crowd be as excited as they were! Should be a fun time to drop by on, and of course I will be wearing my Banksy flower thrower costume for this event. See you there.

Loadstar at Elements this week!

The mighty Loadstar brings the pressure in the third week of an intense February (seriously we already had TeeBee and Calyx)! A powerhouse in the studio, when not making their own tracks, Loadstar also does quite a bit of ghost writing and producing for various music industry big cats. This will be their 3rd visit to Elements and we know by now they’re guaranteed to tear_it_down!

I will be dropping the video HARD for this show, show up! 19+ 10$

15 Year Elements was amazing

What a great night, I am so happy to be part of this family. 6 years every week (give and take) has defined my VJ skills and allowed me to create my art. I am excited for another 15 years!

NYE = RiskeeBall!

So rather than VJ a lame New Years Eve show (I have in the past), I decided to help with a project I missed out on at Burningman this year.

RISKEEBALL! This was part of the Charcade this year, basically a whole bunch of carnival games with flames shooting out of them. And for this year, they will be at First Night in Boston!

This year is sizing up to be quite the step up as far as First Night is concerned, and Boston is actually allowing many things to happen that have not before. Video Bleep will be in Action, Figment (which RiskeeBall is part of) will be on the Commons, the Penrose Triangle is already up, and even Zebbler is projection mapping an amazing performance for the Boston Public Library!

Read all about First Night here, and see you down there, I will be helping with the technical side and also be a Carnival Barker for a bit.

Cyantific this Thursday, Elements

This Thursday at Elements is Cyantific, and I have some sick new stuff to throw on the screens!

Cyantific is not only a beast in the studio, with an ever-growing arsenal of chart toppers on Hospital, Ram, and his own Cyantific imprint, but the man puts it down behind the decks too! No one was surprised when he was crowned “Best Breakthrough DJ” by BBC 1Xtra in ’07. Don’t miss out on the fun! Opening set by Fox. Visuals by me.

Project MUM time lapse 2013 from bonk on Vimeo.

I finally compiled the time lapse of the entire day and night of Project MUM. We spent from 9am (some of us were there at 7am!) till 9pm setting up the various projects, art pieces, and configurations for the show. It was exhausting but very much worth it in the end! The party turned out amazing.

…I ended up doing a bit too much this time around. I set up a installation project, I vj’d, I was media contact during the event for complaints, and also somehow attended and was host as well. At one point I had to VJ, as well as run to my installation which had crashed every 15 minutes, and it was on the other side of the party! I was dead tired after that, and I realized next time I need an assistant or to do less work.

One of my pet projects I did is above, and I was fairly happy with the outcome of it! It makes me want to buy a few more to have next time around (if you pay attention, you can see not only me fiddling with it but also that I moved the camera a few times)! Down the go pro rabbit hole I go…

The only thing that as unfortunate was that my project I was working on with my friend Yetkin only worked for about an hour ( I mentioned this in a post below). The computer totally crashed and I just did not have the time to reset it. Luckily it reset to the default background… of SPACE! Worked perfectly for the time, though it did require me giving it some continual TLC to keep it working.

Anyways, enjoy the time lapse (and the drone video below as well!). Community based art events are the best!

Visualizing for Andy C this Thursday!

andy c

I am really excited about this! Andy C wanted to play none other than Elements and we could not be happier to have him!

Elements proudly presents the highly-anticipated debut appearance of Andy C!

Joining him on the mic will be the incredible MC Armanni Reign! Also… opening set by our long lost DJCrook.

Visuals by me, cover $20, and please be aware that this is a 21+ show. Get excited!

Project MUM: This weekend!

It has come around again for the time of year for Project MUM! This is a very exciting event in Somerville, and one of my local favorites.

I am one mumbotof the organizers (as like last year), and we have a good amount of fun in store for everyone! This years event is over 400 people coming and will be even bigger and badder! I will be VJing, as well as introducing the world to the Slit Scan project my friend Yetkin and I have been talking about. We have been even featured in Dig Boston!

If you are in Boston, please check us out Saturday night (14th), 8-midnight-ish. This is not to be missed!
