VisSom2 funded, Vj for 3LAU, Cityfox

What wild ride!

I just completed my Kickstarter for my event, Visualize Somerville 2. It got fully funded, which is amazing. Last minute pledges came in and really pushed it past the threshold at the 11th hour. I can certainly tell you, Kickstarters are very stressful. The pledges, as I researched, are like “U”. They start strong with all your friends and family pledging and helping you along. Then there is this long stretch where you get barely any, but you keep having to post post post about the event. That is a very hard time to deal. It seems every post produced 1 or 2 pledges, and I just felt like I was beating a dead horse! Especially with Facebook being harder to reach a crowd now… It was a hair raising few weeks. Onward though, as we got funded, now I have to get all sorts of gear, projectors, access points, the works. This is a big event and has a lot of moving parts. Some are not in my control, and that is scary too. This is also my MLA Capstone project (replaces a Thesis), at Harvard Extension, so I figured go big with it!

Next up is this:

3LAU

A VJ friend of mine just dropped a huge gig on my lap, VJ for 3LAU in Virginia this Friday! Whoa. I am getting flown there, play the show, and flown out Saturday morning to NYC. Why NYC? Because there is another Cityfox event, and I am not missing that. I get to babysit projectors and do some VJ work, and then helping with breakdown. Money in the bank and I get some fun music times as well.

Further Future lineup

Combine this all with the upcoming Further Future event AND moving to LA, and I have a LOT on my plate.

Living the fast life is hard. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Vj competition recap video now out

I finally had the time to edit down the video of the night and get a recap video out! We were so excited to produce this year, all the elements, the gracious sponsors, the amazing visual artists, and the Together Festival really came together. Next year will be even bigger with more visual artists, more cool video and gear, and much more awesome. We have big plans for the VJ competition! Stay tuned.

In the mean time, of course check out the video below and get a sample of what a VJ, or visual artist, can do. This event was all about putting some of the amazing talent that usually is just hidden behind the crowd into the forefront. I think they did a pretty good job, and there was a few sets where I was really impressed by the ingenuity and overall performance. We had a lot of heavy hitters this year, a few from Zebbler Studios, a few more professional VJs, and even a few crazy code hackers. What a great group and great VJ competition.

Thanks to our awesome VJs:
BUZI
Parzer
Yegglet
ProjectileObjects
Levitation Theory
Clear Void
Adrenochrome
Jaeson Tek
OPTEX
VisualVince

Thank you again to our sponsors Resolume, Alien TV, Arkaos, Doc Optic, Livid, Leap Motion, Mixvibes, Neuromixer, Vid Vox, Vezer, VJ Loops, Magic Music Visuals, and Synthetic Software.

FractalFest is confirmed

So I am confirmed for Fractal Fest in the great northern woods of New England. Very excited about this, these guys, Fractaltribe are great people and really care about their events. Every event they do have been intentional, well designed, and most importantly, FUN! This year I (finally) am taking the time to go up there and show they just what we can do to make the world shine a bit brighter. I am looking forward to working with all other other VJs this year too, many of them are great friends and I am happy to think of just what types of awesome video techniques we come up with. Put to many of us in the same room and we start coming up with all sorts of beautiful content and tricks to make the minds eye flutter.

Ever been to an event in the woods of New England? It is a special type of place. Of course my mind always does wander to the west and its vast tracks of desert and arid forests, but, like the NorthWest, New England has a special flavor that is hard to find anywhere else. You need to eperience it to truly understand. Most importantly though, bring a raincoat and bug spray. I never said it was the best conditions, just unique. The woods are bursting with life, which is great in some ways, but not in others (like lots of mosquitoes). But fear not, since when the music is going, and the video and bass hit you all at once, you will understand it was all worth it to be in the forest paradise.

Not going yet to Fractalfest? Come out! You will be happy you did. Details at the Fractal Tribe site.

Harvard Business School vj gig

I had the chance to randomly get a vj gig at Harvard Business School. It was through a referral of someone, and it was a great time. First off the location (Spangler Hall) was amazing. The entire visual setup was built right into the building and the projectors were built right into the doorways. At first I thought the projectors would come down from the ceiling but they were both located in the archway of the the doors! Pretty posh.

The event was for a Digital Summit for the school, and after the talks (with likes of the founder of Zipcar for example), there was a gala. They wanted to bring in something different and that meant a video artist like me! I got to setup my TouchOSC setup on my Ipad and walk around and let people trigger controls. It was a great time. The best part of course was I had to wear a suit, which I do like to do one in awhile. It is good to get out of a music venue and into somewhere new.

Last weekend VJ recap (Sonic Beating, Together Festival, TedX Somerville)

Lots of things are rolling into motion from this weekend!

-We are planning to fully announce this soon, but I once again will be creating the Together Festival VJ Competition. Very excited about this and already we have a great team setting up for this unique event. More info to come with this, but I already know this will be a huge event!

-Started working on a project for TedX Somerville, and while it is still in the earliest stages, this may lead to a huge project. Already happy to be working with them!

-This last weekend was a private Sonic Beating party, “Eye Heart Brains”. It was a blast and I got to vj with my copatriot Dj Anya. We had a ball, packed the place and had an most unbelievable time! Some shots of it below.

All in all it was an amazing weekend and the next few months will be chock full of incredible projects and events. With the on rush of warmer weather I can only imagine it will get better and better!

Visualize Somerville Recap Video

We finally are releasing the recap from Visualize Somerville! This is a product of so much dedication and work from many talented teams of artists.
I came up with this idea almost 2 years ago, and since then it has been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. We almost didn’t have it happen….twice!
But becuase of the crew around me and a massive effort at the end, we came together and produced a unique event that I am truly proud of. The documentary team, Above Summit, really came

in and blew it away with the video capture. Time lapse rigs, drones shooting video, and a full crew to capture the moments. I am glad that the art show got some credit too, that was a part I didn’t know

would be so much work! The artists were very helpful and the work they put up was really breathtaking. All I can hope is people had fun and will want to do it again. I got the thumbs up from both venues, who know where we

will go with this now? Check out the video and stay tuned.

Robot Heart Further Future Festival

I just got confirmation that I am booked for this festival! Las Vegas, here I come. RobotHeart, a Burningman camp has really shown that they know how to push the envelop year after year. Now they are creating their own festival, Further Future. I worked with them last year for their Halloween party, and I have never seen the excitement and dedication that they put into that venue. I expect they will do the same with this event. The location is still secret, but I know from a source or two that there is a lot of work that needs to go into it. If anyone can do it, it is RobotHeart, and I am proud to be part of it. I also heard who the projection company is going to be, and being an old AV guy, I am impressed. This will be a most amazing event, time to get to work!

Visualize Somerville, Feb 27th!

So a few months ago I attempted to pull together a projection mapping event at a rock climbing gym local to me. Unfortunately it did not happen due to a pipe bursting and ruining the projections (they were insured luckily), but coming back to it and now we are doing it again!

This time around it is a much bigger event. We are trucking in over 50,000 lumens of projection systems (a normal projector is around 2000 just for reference) and lighting up a large part of Brooklyn Boulders. Check out the space:

The VJ team is working on some amazing content as well. They have created custom models and are churning out the content for some really unique stuff!

Next door to Brooklyn Boulders is Aeronaut Brewery, which is a great new event space and brewery/bar. They have hosted all sorts of cool gatherings there, from bands to projection events (Bring Your Own Beamer) all the way to a retro gaming night! In creating Visualize Somerville, we included them and they are now going to be throwing an art show next door. We are getting something like 32 artists to come in and put up everything from photography, installations, performances, paintings, and other creative artistry. We just selected the artists and I am very impressed by both the diversity of the artwork and the impressiveness of it.

This multi venue event will be on Friday the 27th of February and go from 8pm-11pm at Brooklyn Boulders, and 8-midnight at Aeronaut. Links and flyer below.

Modem video out

I was lucky enough to be part of a truly amazing festival this summer, MoDem in Croatia. I worked the amazing Italian based Deltaprocess VJ team to light up the massive main stage and chill areas for a solid week. The mapped stage was huge and, along with the other incredible deco, made for a most mind shattering week of psychedelic trance.

The recap video for the festival has finally come out today, and of course the VJ team is highlighted! If you want to skip to it, after the 8 minute mark is when they start to focus on the visual content, I even have a cameo.

Check it out, it is one thing telling people about an event like this, but it is another to show them. Later when I have the time I will update with my own videos, pictures and stories. Until then enjoy the recap!

(and as always, check out my whole travel blog as I update it through the countries I went through this summer!)

Finally Back

After quite the journey, I am back in Boston to recollect myself and start the next chapter. I will be updating my Tumblr with my trip details and stories. I got to VJ at 2 very special locations, and will add those to this site once I get them situated!

Final days to submit for the VJ competition!

It went so fast! Once again, this years VJ competition is in full swing. The last day to submit an entry is Sunday at midnight!

We already have some great entries, but I hope to get a few more in. This event is a celebration of VJ culture in the USA, which sometimes I feel is under represented. Live visual creation is an art, and there are many of us that perform this art for our own enjoyment.

Together-2014-vj-comp

Now is the time to come out from the back of the venue and show the world what you can do! We have some great prizes this year, a QuNeo midi  controller for starters, Nueromixer, Resolume, and TouchDesigner (Derivitive) have all graciously provided software as well. I can’t just wait to give out this stuff to the winners, always makes me feel good to help out my fellow visual artists.

The deadline is Sunday at Midnight as I said, and all entries will be taken and reviewed by the judges. What a group we have right the judging panel, Ghostdad (best known for the visual artist behind the Porter Robinson shows), Shawn Flaherty, a local vj and CEMI favorite and winner of the NIN video contest a few years back. Of course we cannot forget about Brian Kane, VJ legend in his own right!

I can’t wait to see who will be chosen to come out to this event. I can only get more excited.

Of course, come out and see the show! Show really be some amazing content being displayed.

Fractaltribes Subculture this Saturday!

LOGO_03-e1394735688855

Subculture holds a special place in my heart. That is why I just had to get down there to do some visuals for this momentous event! The venue is a giant old industrial warehouse and they do it up proper, especially on the video mapping side of things. I am very excited to make my visuals light up the revelers as they dance under the amazing deco that goes up at every event they do!

Anime Boston 2014

This weekend is Anime Boston, which is a huge deal in that subculture. I was honored to play a visual set there a few years ago and I have NEVER seen a crowd be as excited as they were! Should be a fun time to drop by on, and of course I will be wearing my Banksy flower thrower costume for this event. See you there.

Positron at Elements this week

We were so impressed with Positron’s opening set earlier this year that we wanted to bring him back for a headlining set ASAP! Come rep for his first official Elements appearance and rest assured, he does not disappoint! Opening set by Fox.

New visual set tonight as well, so I am fairly excited!

Loadstar at Elements this week!

The mighty Loadstar brings the pressure in the third week of an intense February (seriously we already had TeeBee and Calyx)! A powerhouse in the studio, when not making their own tracks, Loadstar also does quite a bit of ghost writing and producing for various music industry big cats. This will be their 3rd visit to Elements and we know by now they’re guaranteed to tear_it_down!

I will be dropping the video HARD for this show, show up! 19+ 10$

Drones + Brooklyn Boulders = amazing

This Sunday I went down to Brooklyn Boulders in Somerville with a few friends. We brought out our drones and flew them all around this amazing rock gym that opened its door less than a year ago. Amazing spaces call for amazing video shoots, and how better to do that then with a few drones?

Below is a post that Bill of Iflycameras did a great video wrapup of some of the shots we did!

check out the video and photos!

Calyx and Teebee

Thursday is yet another HUGE night.

Calyx & Teebee are back for the first time at Elements since 2007!

These two not only put out some of our favorite music like clockwork, but they are masters behind the wheels too.

Do not sleep! Opening set by Fox. New visual set by Yours Truly.
